Battle of the Books Documentation

I began coaching the McGee's Crossroads Middle School (my alternate internship site) Battle of the Books team on January 17, 2012.  We met three times per week.  This energetic little group worked tirelessly and went on to win the county competition on March 6, 2012.  We will attend the regional competition on March 23 in Durham.

Documentation of Reading Program: A Book Club is Born!

This book club is at its beginning stages.  As the media coordinator, I am a facilitator, but the book club is student-led with an emphasis on issues that concern teens.  With my guidance, the students choose the themes and the texts that address these themes.  The first book we are reading is Shine, by Lauren Myracle.  Alex, the student leader expressed an interest in a novel that might open a dialogue between the straight and GLBT communities.  He specifically hopes to address bullying of the gay community.  Myracle's book is perfect for this purpose.  During the Power Lunch interest meetings, I booktalked the novel several times.  It's inspiring to see student interest grow.  Friends are inviting friends, and each session became a little larger than the previous one.  I'm hoping that this book club will empower a students to change and be more active in their communities.

Themed Book Display

The following book display was created to honor the memory of a teacher the school lost to breast cancer.  This new collection reflects award winning titles that were purchased with funds donated by the 50-210 Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.  Each book includes a specially designed bookplate.
